Helleborus x Frostkiss® 'Penny's Pink', commonly called Frostless Penny Pinks or Penny's Pink Lenten Rose, is an exceptional evergreen perennial valued for its vibrant, long-lasting winter and early spring blooms and marbled foliage. The plant forms a compact clump, reaching 18–24 inches tall and wide, with leathery, dark green leaves marked by bold pink, purple, and bronze veins that mature to a striking emerald green. From late winter into early spring, upright stems display broad, deep mauve-pink flowers with crown-like yellow stamens, opening from purple buds and holding their color as they mature—providing vivid color when little else is in flower.
Growing Helleborus Frostless Penny Pinks
Light: Thrives in full to partial shade (0–3 hours of direct sun), making it ideal for woodland gardens or shaded borders.
Soil: Prefers rich, moist but well-drained soil with neutral to alkaline pH; tolerates chalk, clay, or loam.
Water: Low to average needs once established. Water when the top few inches of soil are dry; tolerant of occasional drought.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 4–9. Resilient to late winter frosts and cold spells.
Maintenance: Top dress in spring with compost; apply balanced fertilizer. Prune spent leaves before blooms emerge for best display. Divide clumps in fall as needed.
Resists: Deer, rabbit, most pests, and disease; low maintenance perennial.
Uses: Excellent for beds, borders, mass plantings, containers, and under tall shrubs for year-round interest.
