Silky Deep Red Milkweed | Asclepias curassavica ‘Silky Deep Red’ | Deep Red Bloodflower | Tropical Milkweed ‘Silky Deep Red’

Silky Deep Red Milkweed is a fast-growing, heat-loving tropical perennial (widely grown as an annual in cooler climates) prized for its striking, flat-topped clusters of deep crimson-red blossoms adorned with vibrant golden-yellow centers. This highly sought-after selection is known for its upright, branching habit and its crucial role as a primary host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars. Its nectar-rich flowers are an absolute magnet for hummingbirds, bees, and a wide variety of adult butterflies, making it a standout thriller for dedicated pollinator gardens, sunny mixed borders, and large patio containers. With its robust form and reliable performance through the intense summer heat, Silky Deep Red offers bold, fiery color and exceptional ecological value with remarkably straightforward care.

Growing Silky Deep Red Milkweed

Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight to produce the most abundant, vibrant blooms and strong, sturdy stems capable of supporting feeding caterpillars.

Soil: Rich, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to various soil types, including poor or sandy soils, but performs best in a loamy mix. It requires good drainage to prevent root rot.

Water: Moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It is fairly drought-tolerant once mature but appreciates consistent moisture during the hottest parts of the summer.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. If grown as a perennial in warm climates (zones 9-11), it is highly recommended to cut the plant back to the ground in late fall to promote fresh spring growth and prevent the build-up of parasites that can harm monarch populations.

Wildlife: Essential host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars; flowers are highly attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its toxic, milky sap.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 9–11; widely grown as a vigorous, fast-growing summer annual in cooler regions.
