Gojiberry Shrub (Lycium barbarum) is a hardy, nutrient-rich superfruit plant valued for its clusters of bright red, antioxidant-packed berries. Long prized in traditional wellness practices, gojiberries have a sweet, slightly tangy flavor and can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in teas, smoothies, and baked goods. The vigorous shrub grows upright with arching canes and silvery-green foliage, producing small purple flowers in spring that give way to heavy crops of berries from midsummer into fall. Easy to grow and highly adaptable, gojiberry is a productive and rewarding addition to home gardens, edible landscapes, or small orchards.
Growing Gojiberry Shrub
Light: Thrives in full sun, though it can tolerate light shade.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; tolerant of a wide range, including sandy or loamy soils.
Water: Water regularly the first year to establish roots. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Fertilizer: Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth and fruiting.
Pollination: Self-fertile; each plant sets fruit on its own.
Maintenance: Prune in late winter to remove old canes and encourage vigorous, new productive shoots. Can be trained on a trellis for easier harvest and improved air circulation.
Hardiness: Best grown in USDA zones 5–9. Berries ripen steadily through midsummer and early fall.
