Phenomenal Lavender | Lavandula x intermedia ‘Phenomenal’ | French Lavender | Lavandula ‘Phenomenal’
Phenomenal Lavender is an outstanding, highly aromatic herbaceous perennial prized for its remarkable hardiness and its striking, uniform mounds of silvery-green foliage topped with elegant spikes of rich purple-blue flowers. This exceptional French hybrid (Lavandin) is celebrated for its unparalleled resistance to heat, humidity, and harsh winter die-back, setting a new standard of resilience for landscape lavenders. Its heavily scented blooms and fragrant foliage make it a standout choice for sensory gardens, aromatic low hedges, mass plantings, and cut flower arrangements, both fresh and dried. With its vigorous, mounding form and reliable performance across diverse climates, Phenomenal Lavender offers classic Mediterranean beauty, exceptional essential oil production, and effortless elegance with remarkably straightforward care.
Growing Phenomenal Lavender
Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most robust growth, the most abundant blooms, and highly concentrated essential oils for the best fragrance.
Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable but absolutely requires excellent drainage, as it is highly susceptible to root and crown rot in heavy, wet, or waterlogged clay soils. It performs best in sandy, gravelly, slightly alkaline mixes.
Water: Low; water regularly until established, then allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes consistently wet feet.
Maintenance: Low maintenance. Harvest flower wands just as the first buds begin to open for the longest-lasting scent in dried arrangements. Prune the entire plant back by about one-third in early spring—taking care not to cut into the old, leafless woody base—to maintain a tight, compact mound and encourage a vigorous flush of fresh growth.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its strongly aromatic oils.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 5–9; extremely cold-hardy and notably more resilient to winter moisture and summer humidity compared to standard lavender varieties.
