White Swamp Milkweed | Asclepias incarnata f. alba | Ice Ballet Swamp Milkweed | White Asclepias
White Swamp Milkweed is a stunning, sun-loving native herbaceous perennial prized for its spectacular, vanilla-scented clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers and its critical role in supporting local ecosystems. This exceptionally tough, moisture-loving selection is known for its sturdy, upright habit and narrow, willow-like green leaves that thrive in wet, boggy conditions where many other plants struggle. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, and its foliage serves as an essential, exclusive host food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny landscape borders, rain gardens, and dedicated pollinator habitats. With its pristine color and reliable performance in challenging, heavy soils, White Swamp Milkweed offers an extraordinary display of mid-to-late summer blooms with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing White Swamp Milkweed
Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, sturdy upright form.
Soil: Moist to wet, rich soil; highly adaptable to heavy clay and boggy conditions that would cause root rot in most other perennials. It can tolerate average garden soils provided it is watered deeply and consistently.
Water: Moderate to high; water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist. Unlike many other milkweed varieties, this species naturally thrives in swamps and wet meadows and strongly dislikes drying out completely.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Leave the intriguing, teardrop-shaped seed pods in place for beautiful late-season interest, or carefully remove them before they split open to prevent aggressive self-seeding. Cut the old stems down to the ground in late winter or early spring before fresh new growth emerges.
Wildlife: Essential host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars; highly attractive to adult butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial pollinators; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its milky sap.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 3–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates.
