Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a classic, fast-growing houseplant renowned for its cascading, arching leaves and ability to thrive in a wide range of indoor conditions. The slender, strap-like foliage is often variegated in bright green with creamy white stripes, creating a striking display in hanging baskets or containers. Mature plants produce arching stems with small star-shaped white flowers, followed by baby plantlets (“spiderettes”) that dangle attractively and are simple to propagate. Spider plants can reach up to 50 cm (20 in.) tall and are equally suited for container or mixed planters, offering vibrant structure and a lush, tropical look indoors.

Growing Spider Plant

Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight indoors; tolerates medium and lower light but may slow in growth and lose variegation. Avoid intense direct sun to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil: Prefers well-drained, general-purpose potting soil or a soilless medium. Best when slightly pot bound, but repot every year or two to refresh and allow continued growth.

Water: Water when the top inch or two of soil dries out, and always allow excess water to drain. Overwatering or leaving the pot standing in water can lead to root rot. Mist occasionally if household air is very dry.

Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with an all-purpose fertilizer. Use less fertilizer in fall and winter or if repotting regularly.

Maintenance: Remove yellowing or brown leaf tips, which may be caused by dry air, water impurities, or inconsistent watering. Prune off old or damaged leaves at the base to refresh growth.

Propagation: Easily propagated from plantlets. After roots develop on the baby shoots, plant them in moist soil to grow new plants.

Hardiness: Can be grown outdoors as an annual in cool climates or year-round in mild climates. Tolerates cooler temperatures but grows best indoors between 60–80⁰F (16–27⁰C).

Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans and pets, making it safe for every household.
