Autumn Joy Stonecrop | Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ | Hylotelephium ‘Herbstfreude’ | Sedum spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’
Autumn Joy Stonecrop is a classic, highly sought-after herbaceous perennial prized for its fleshy, succulent blue-green foliage and spectacular, broccoli-like flower heads that emerge pale pink in late summer and steadily mature to a rich, coppery red by autumn. This exceptionally tough, drought-tolerant selection is known for its sturdy, upright habit that provides remarkable architectural interest and vibrant late-season color when many other plants are beginning to fade. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for butterflies and bees, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny landscape borders, rock gardens, and mass plantings. With its reliable performance through the intense summer heat and beautiful dried flower heads that offer striking winter interest, Autumn Joy offers an extraordinary, nearly year-round display with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Autumn Joy
Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, sturdy upright form. Too much shade will cause the stems to become leggy and flop.
Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor, sandy, or gravelly soils as long as drainage is excellent. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay or overly rich, wet soils.
Water: Low; water regularly until established, then allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Its fleshy, succulent leaves store water, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant and highly sensitive to overwatering.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Leave the dried flower heads standing to provide beautiful winter interest and food for birds, then cut the old stems all the way back to the ground in very early spring just before fresh new growth emerges.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators; generally deer- and rabbit-resistant.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 3–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates.
