Silky Gold Milkweed | Asclepias curassavica ‘Silky Gold’ | Silky Gold Tropical Milkweed | Golden Butterflyweed

Silky Gold Milkweed is a stunning, fast-growing herbaceous perennial (often grown as an annual in cooler climates) prized for its spectacular, continuous profusion of intense, golden-yellow flower clusters that bloom prolifically from early summer all the way into late fall. This exceptionally tough, heat-tolerant selection is known for its remarkable ecological value—serving as an essential host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars and a rich nectar supply for mature pollinators. Its sturdy, upright habit and narrow, willow-like green foliage make it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny landscape borders, pollinator gardens, and mixed patio containers. With its bold, bright golden color and reliable performance through challenging heat and humidity, Silky Gold offers an extraordinary display of vibrant summer blooms and critical ecosystem support with exceptionally straightforward care.

Growing Silky Gold Milkweed

Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, sturdy upright form. It will tolerate light shade, but too much shade will cause the stems to become leggy and significantly reduce flowering.

Soil: Light, sandy, or loamy, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor or average soils as long as drainage is excellent. It strongly dislikes sitting in heavy, waterlogged clay, especially during the cold, wet winter months.

Water: Moderate; water regularly to deeply establish its root system during the first growing season, then allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes consistently wet feet.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Deadhead spent flower clusters to encourage a continuous, prolific second flush of blooms. In the fall, it is highly recommended to cut the plant back to the base (about 6 to 8 inches tall) after the caterpillars have left; this encourages natural Monarch migration and removes overwintering foliage. Use caution when pruning, as broken stems release a milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes.

Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds; serves as a vital egg-laying host and sole food supply for Monarch butterfly caterpillars. Naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 8–11; widely grown as a spectacular, fast-growing summer annual or container plant in all cooler regions.

Customer photo review of Pink Swamp Milkweed

Plants arrived in great condition. This plant has only been in the ground about 10 days and is growing a lot. The plant cage is 12” tall so it’s doing well. I put guards around my new plants for a little while because I have bunnies who love tender young leaves.

Customer photo review of Musa 'Red Dacca' Banana

Need to upgrade your packaging. I would suggest taping the plant in place in the cardboard tube on the count that it slid and smashed itself. Luckily, it's a strong plant and should recover. Hoping.for the best.

Customer photo review of Violette de Bordeaux Fig

I received what I believe is a very healthy plant. Unfortunately, the shipping was very hard on the plant. It is quickly bouncing back. Wish I would have known it was a seedling .

Customer photo review of Violette de Bordeaux Fig

The package arrived with no issues. The fig was very stable & looked like it came out of the nursery (it did). The USDA certificates for Gypsy moth /Japanese beetles ensures the plant were checked makes me feel I finally found an institution which cares about the customer & plant. Thanks Jose
