Yellow Dragon Fruit | Yellow Pitaya | Honey Dragon Fruit | Selenicereus megalanthus
Yellow Dragon Fruit is an exotic vining cactus renowned for bearing the sweetest and most flavorful of all pitaya varieties. Unlike its red-skinned cousins, this distinct variety features bright yellow skin and translucent, meltingly soft white flesh with delicious notes of honey and jasmine. Before fruiting, the plant puts on a breathtaking display of massive, nocturnal white flowers—often called "Moonflowers"—that fill the evening air with fragrance. Ideal for trellising, this tropical climber is perfect for sunny patios, greenhouses, or bright indoor spaces.
Growing Yellow Dragon Fruit
- Light: Thrives in full sun; requires significant direct sunlight to bloom and set fruit.
- Soil: Rich, well-draining cactus mix or sandy loam; highly intolerant of "wet feet" or standing water.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the soil surface is dry to the touch; reduce watering significantly in the winter dormancy period.
- Maintenance: Requires a sturdy trellis or post for support; prune side shoots to encourage upward growth and handle with care, as the stems and fruit have small thorns.
- Wildlife: The spectacular night-blooming flowers attract moths, bats, and other nocturnal pollinators.
- Hardiness: USDA Zones 10–11; frost-sensitive and must be protected or brought indoors if temperatures drop near freezing (32°F).
