Persian Shield | Strobilanthes dyerianus | Royal Purple Plant | Strobilanthes ‘Persian Shield’

Persian Shield is a stunning, heat-loving tropical subshrub (often grown as a fast-growing annual in cooler climates or as a spectacular indoor house plant) prized for its spectacular, continuous profusion of large, iridescent purple leaves brilliantly veined with dark green and metallic silver. This exceptionally tough, adaptable selection is known for its remarkable, bushy habit and bold, striking foliage that creates a dramatic, artistic statement piece for any collection. Its richly colored leaves provide unmatched contrast, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for shaded landscape borders, mixed patio containers, and bright indoor spaces. With its bold, architectural texture and uniquely vibrant purple foliage, Persian Shield offers an extraordinary display of tropical color with exceptionally straightforward care.

Growing Persian Shield

Light: Partial shade to bright, indirect light; thrives in dappled sunlight or gentle morning sun. It requires strict protection from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which will easily scorch its delicate, colorful leaves, though too much shade will cause it to lose its striking metallic purple vibrancy and become leggy.

Soil: Rich, airy, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to average soils, though it prefers a highly organic, loamy potting mix amended with compost to retain adequate moisture while ensuring excellent aeration and drainage. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged soils.

Water: Moderate; water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It strongly dislikes being completely dried out and will quickly droop if left thirsty, but rebounds rapidly once watered.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Pinch back the growing tips or long, leggy stems regularly to encourage a much bushier, denser branching habit and a renewed wave of intensely colored foliage.

Wildlife: Generally grown for its striking foliage; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant outdoors.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 9–11; widely grown as a spectacular, fast-growing shade annual in cooler regions or overwintered indoors as a vibrant, year-round house plant.

Shipping Info

Persian Shield plants are shipped as healthy young starts in 4" nursery pots. Allow 1–2 weeks after arrival for plants to recover from shipping and resume active growth before repotting or planting outdoors.

Customer video review of Lantana 'Dallas Red'

I was very impressed with how well my 18 little lantanas were packed. All looked healthy and I planted them yesterday. It was a little difficult unpacking them but that’s the price I paid for having you pack them so well. I was a little worried when I saw UPS coming to the door with the box slung over the driver’s shoulder despite the fact that the box was marked with an ⬆️ and it said live plants. But all is well. Now if I can just keep them alive.

Customer photo review of Coral Honeysuckle 'Honey Coral'

Lovely little guy-- impossible to find coral honeysuckle at my local nursery for whatever reason. I really appreciate that the Blossomdale staff kept it and nurtured it a little longer so it would be more robust for the trip. Can't wait to put it in the ground and watch it thrive :-) Will order from them again.

Customer photo review of Violette de Bordeaux Fig

It's doing really well. I will be transferring it to a bigger pot probably by the weekend. I wish I had a little more instructions on how to care for this variety, and what to do in the fall.

Customer photo review of Medinilla Myriantha 'Malaysian Orchid'

Very healthy cutting. Followed the instructions and let it get acclimated to its new surroundings for a couple of weeks before repotting. Would not hesitate to purchase from this business again 😃

Customer photo review of Pink Swamp Milkweed

Plants arrived in great condition. This plant has only been in the ground about 10 days and is growing a lot. The plant cage is 12” tall so it’s doing well. I put guards around my new plants for a little while because I have bunnies who love tender young leaves.

Customer photo review of Mystery Plant

I got 2 mystery plants (one indoor and one outdoor). The indoor was a pilea and the outdoor plant was a white blackberry. White blackberry was dramatic, but it’s making a comeback and the pilea is doing great!

Customer photo review of Musa 'Red Dacca' Banana

Need to upgrade your packaging. I would suggest taping the plant in place in the cardboard tube on the count that it slid and smashed itself. Luckily, it's a strong plant and should recover. Hoping.for the best.

Customer photo review of Pomegranate 'Dwarf Red'

This little guy came in perfect. Despite the cat knocking it over and being placed in the soup cup for safer keeping, it’s thriving and happy. Once it’s bigger then it will make its way outdoors.
