Dark Form Philodendron Gloriosum | Philodendron gloriosum ‘Dark Form’ | Velvety Philodendron ‘Dark Form’ | Philodendron ‘Dark Form’

Dark Form Philodendron Gloriosum is a breathtaking, highly sought-after rare tropical aroid (widely grown as a house plant in cooler climates) prized for its massive, heart-shaped, velvety leaves that feature a much deeper, richer dark green coloration than the standard species, highlighted by striking, contrasting pale veins. This spectacular terrestrial species is known for its unique creeping habit—growing horizontally along the soil surface rather than climbing—and its incredibly plush, luxurious foliage. Its dramatic, oversized leaves make it a standout choice for bright sunrooms, wide decorative planters, and modern indoor plant collections. With its bold, structural form and preference for warm, humid conditions, the Dark Form offers a spectacular, jungle-like aesthetic for dedicated house plant enthusiasts.

Growing Dark Form Philodendron Gloriosum

Light: Bright, indirect light; thrives in well-lit indoor spaces but requires strict protection from harsh, direct sunlight which can easily scorch its delicate, velvety leaves and cause its dark coloration to fade.

Soil: Rich, chunky, well-drained aroid potting mix; prefers a coarse, airy blend amended with orchid bark, perlite, and charcoal to ensure excellent aeration. Because it is a crawler, it performs best in a long, rectangular planter to allow the horizontal rhizome room to grow.

Water: Moderate; water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil feel dry. It requires consistently high ambient humidity (typically 60% or higher) to keep its massive leaves supple and healthy. Ensure the creeping rhizome rests on top of the soil and is not buried, as it is highly susceptible to rot if kept too wet.

Maintenance: Wipe leaves very gently with a damp, soft cloth to remove dust and maintain their plush appearance. A humidifier is highly recommended to provide the extra moisture in the air it craves. Regular feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season will support the development of its giant leaves.

Wildlife: Keep away from pets; toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Primarily grown for its spectacular decorative foliage.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–12; widely grown as a year-round house plant in cooler regions.
