Blueberry Muffin Bugleweed | Ajuga reptans ‘Blueberry Muffin’ | Blueberry Muffin Ajuga | Ajuga ‘Blueberry Muffin’
Blueberry Muffin Bugleweed is a vigorous, shade-loving evergreen perennial groundcover prized for its spectacular, dense mats of small, thick, dark green leaves with striking bronze highlights and its prolific, deep blueberry-blue flower spikes that bloom in mid-to-late spring. This exceptionally tough, cold-hardy selection is known for its remarkable, fast-growing creeping habit, quickly filling in bare spots and suppressing weeds where turfgrass struggles. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for bees and butterflies, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance spiller and edger for shaded landscape borders, woodland gardens, and mixed patio containers. With its bold texture and reliable performance through challenging conditions, Blueberry Muffin offers an extraordinary display of vibrant spring blooms and lush, year-round foliage with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Blueberry Muffin Bugleweed
Light: Partial shade to full shade; thrives in dappled sunlight or gentle morning sun. It can tolerate more sun in cooler climates if provided with adequate moisture, but the foliage will scorch in harsh, direct afternoon sunlight.
Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to average soils, though it prefers a highly organic, loamy potting mix amended with compost. It is generally resistant to crown rot, but still strongly dislikes sitting in heavy, waterlogged clay.
Water: Moderate; water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during hot, dry spells. It is somewhat drought-tolerant once established but performs best and spreads most vigorously with consistent moisture.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Mow or trim the spent flower spikes after blooming to maintain a neat, tidy appearance. It spreads via underground stolons and can be easily divided in early spring or early fall to control its spread or propagate new plants.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to bees and butterflies; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 3–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates provided it has excellent winter drainage.
