Blue Fescue Grass | Festuca glauca | Ornamental Blue Fescue | Blue Fescue
Blue Fescue Grass is a striking, compact ornamental grass prized for its neat, dome-shaped mounds of finely textured, icy blue-silver foliage that provides outstanding year-round visual interest. This exceptionally tough and durable evergreen (or semi-evergreen in colder climates) grass is known for its neat clumping habit, outstanding drought tolerance, and the delicate, wheat-like flower plumes that rise above the foliage in early summer, maturing to a warm tan. Its cool, metallic color creates a stunning contrast against dark green foliage or vibrant blooms, making it a standout choice for rock gardens, landscape edging, mass plantings, and mixed patio containers. With its tidy form and reliable performance in dry, sunny conditions, Blue Fescue offers architectural elegance and unique color with minimal maintenance.
Growing Blue Fescue Grass
Light: Full sun; requires direct sunlight to produce the most vibrant, silvery-blue foliage color and maintain a tight, compact mound.
Soil: Well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor, rocky, or sandy soils, but will absolutely not tolerate heavy clay or soggy, waterlogged winter conditions.
Water: Low; water regularly until established, after which it becomes highly drought-tolerant, requiring supplemental watering only during severe dry spells.
Maintenance: Low maintenance. In early spring, simply comb through the foliage with your fingers or a small rake to remove any dead, brown blades, or give the mound a light trim. Divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years to maintain plant vigor and prevent the center from dying out.
Wildlife: Grown primarily for its structural, ornamental foliage; highly resistant to deer and rabbits.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 4–8.
