Arbequina Olive Tree | Olea europaea ‘Arbequina’ | Spanish Olive Tree | Olea ‘Arbequina’

Arbequina Olive Tree is a highly sought-after, self-pollinating evergreen fruit tree prized for its attractive, silvery-green foliage and its prolific production of small, highly aromatic olives that are renowned for their exceptional buttery flavor and high-quality oil. This adaptable, fast-growing selection is known for its graceful, slightly weeping habit and its remarkable ability to fruit at a young age, often producing a bountiful harvest even when grown in containers. Its elegant, Mediterranean aesthetic makes it a standout choice for sunny patios, orchard plantings, and as a sophisticated indoor specimen. With its robust form and exceptional drought tolerance, the Arbequina Olive Tree offers both gourmet culinary rewards and timeless architectural beauty with straightforward care.

Growing Arbequina Olive Tree

Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most robust growth and the most abundant fruit yield. If grown indoors as a house plant, it requires the brightest possible light from a south-facing window.

Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable but absolutely requires excellent drainage, as it is susceptible to root rot in heavy, wet, or waterlogged clay soils. It performs best in sandy, gravelly, slightly alkaline mixes.

Water: Low to moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature. Container-grown trees will require more frequent watering than those planted in the ground.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a desired shape, open the canopy for better airflow, and remove any dead or crossing branches. While it is self-fertile and only requires one tree to produce fruit, planting a second tree nearby can increase the overall yield.

Wildlife: Flowers are attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators; naturally deer-resistant.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 8–11; widely grown as a containerized house plant or overwintered indoors in a bright, cool space in the colder regions of its hardiness range.
