Kingwood Karnival Coleus | Coleus scutellarioides ‘Kingwood Karnival’ | Solenostemon ‘Kingwood Karnival’ | Coleus ‘Kingwood Karnival’
Kingwood Karnival Coleus is a vibrant, shade-tolerant tropical perennial (widely grown as an annual in cooler climates or as a beautiful indoor house plant) prized for its spectacular, highly textured foliage featuring a striking, dynamic blend of deep burgundy, rich magenta, bright green, and golden yellow. This vigorous, upright selection is known for its remarkable ability to bring brilliant, continuous color to low-light environments from spring until the first frost. Its boldly patterned, serrated leaves make it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for mixed patio containers, shaded window boxes, and lush landscape borders. With its dramatic texture and reliable performance in dappled light conditions, Kingwood Karnival offers an extraordinary, non-stop display of rich, tropical color with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Kingwood Karnival Coleus
Light: Partial shade to full shade; thrives in dappled sunlight or gentle morning sun but requires strict protection from harsh, direct afternoon heat, which can easily scorch its delicate leaves and cause the vibrant colors to fade or bleach.
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil; prefers a highly organic, loamy potting mix amended with compost to retain adequate moisture while ensuring excellent aeration and drainage.
Water: Moderate to high; water regularly to keep the soil consistently and evenly moist, but never soggy. Coleus are sensitive to drought and will wilt quickly and dramatically if the soil is allowed to dry out completely.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Pinch back the growing tips frequently early in the season to encourage a fuller, bushier, and more heavily branched shape. It is highly recommended to pinch off any small flower spikes as they appear to direct the plant's energy back into producing its vibrant foliage.
Wildlife: Generally deer-resistant due to its textured foliage. If allowed to bloom, the tiny, pale blue flowers occasionally attract bees and hummingbirds.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–11; widely grown as a spectacular, fast-growing summer annual in cooler regions or overwintered indoors as a vibrant house plant.
