Hot and Spicy Oregano | Origanum vulgare ‘Hot and Spicy’ | Spicy Oregano | Origanum ‘Hot and Spicy’

Hot and Spicy Oregano is a robust, aromatic culinary perennial prized for its small, fuzzy green leaves that deliver an intense, peppery kick, elevating bold Mexican, Latin, and strongly flavored Mediterranean dishes. This dynamic herb is known for its spreading, vigorous habit and its ability to produce delicate clusters of nectar-rich white or pale pink flowers in midsummer. Its remarkably concentrated, fiery flavor makes it a standout choice for kitchen gardens, rock gardens, mixed herb containers, and culinary landscapes. With its resilient nature and exceptional culinary value, Hot and Spicy Oregano offers bold gourmet appeal and lush texture with minimal maintenance.

Growing Hot and Spicy Oregano

Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight to produce the most robust growth and concentrated essential oils for the very best, spiciest flavor.

Soil: Light, well‑drained soil; highly adaptable but requires excellent drainage, as it is susceptible to root rot in heavy, wet, or waterlogged soils. It performs best in average to poor, slightly alkaline soils.

Water: Low to moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is highly drought‑tolerant once mature.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Harvest leaves frequently to encourage a fuller, bushier shape. Shear the plant back lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy form and encourage a fresh flush of pungent foliage.

Wildlife: Highly attractive to bees and butterflies when flowering; naturally deer‑ and rabbit‑resistant due to its strongly aromatic oils.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 5–9; requires excellent winter drainage to reliably survive in the colder regions of its hardiness range.
