Mona Lisa Banana | Musa ‘Mona Lisa’ | Honduran Banana ‘Mona Lisa’ | Musa ‘FHIA-02’
Mona Lisa Banana is a vigorous, fast-growing tropical fruiting plant prized for its lush, broadleaf evergreen foliage, remarkable disease resistance, and its ability to produce excellent, mild-sweet dessert bananas. This heat-tolerant Honduran hybrid (FHIA-02) is known for its partially red pseudostems and large, paddle-shaped green leaves that bring instant architectural drama to the landscape. It is highly resistant to verticillium wilt and thrives in warm, humid environments, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny tropical borders, large mixed patio containers, and edible landscapes. With its bold, tropical texture and reliable performance, Mona Lisa offers an extraordinary display of lush greenery and rewarding fruit production with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Mona Lisa Banana
Light: Full sun to partial sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) which is absolutely required to produce the most vigorous growth and encourage the plant to fruit successfully.
Soil: Rich, moist, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to average soils as long as drainage is adequate, though it prefers a highly organic, loamy mix. It can struggle or experience root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay.
Water: High; water regularly and deeply to keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Bananas are heavy drinkers and require even moisture, especially during the hot summer months, but strongly dislike sitting in standing water.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Bananas are heavy feeders, so apply a balanced, potassium-rich fertilizer regularly during the growing season to support its fast growth and fruit production. Remove any dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance, and cut the main fruiting stem back to the ground after harvesting to allow new pups to grow.
Wildlife: The large, vibrant flowers occasionally attract bees and birds; generally deer-resistant due to its height and thick stems.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 9–11; widely grown as a spectacular seasonal thriller or large container plant in cooler regions, where it can be overwintered indoors as an impressive house plant.
