Spinacia oleracea Seaside Spinach

Spinacia oleracea Seaside Spinach is a premium, smooth-leaf hybrid variety valued for its thick, succulent foliage and exceptional disease resistance. Growing to about 6 to 12 inches tall with a compact spread of 4 to 6 inches, this variety is the gold standard for "baby leaf" production in vegetable gardens, raised beds, and patio containers. Unlike faster-growing varieties that quickly oversized, Seaside maintains its perfect, tender "baby" size for an extended window, offering a harvest of spade-shaped, dark green leaves that are remarkably easy to clean and slow to bolt.

Culinary and Practical Uses

  • The thick, smooth leaves are succulent and tender, making them perfect for raw salads where texture and crunch are key.
  •  Its upright habit keeps leaves clean and grit-free, simplifying preparation for quick sautéing, steaming, or blending into green smoothies.
  • Packed with iron, vitamins A and C, and antioxidants, it serves as a nutrient-dense base for healthy meals.

Characteristics

  • Foliage: Smooth, spade-shaped, very dark green leaves that are thick and flavorful; the lack of crinkles (savoy) makes washing effortless.
  • Growth Habit: Distinctly upright and uniform; keeps leaves lifted off the soil to reduce splashing and rot, making it ideal for high-density planting.
  • Flowers: If heat-stressed or over-mature, produces tall, central seed stalks with insignificant green flowers, signaling the end of the culinary harvest.
  • Seeds: Harvested from dried stalks of mature plants; as an F1 hybrid, seeds may not produce plants identical to the parent.

Growing Requirements

  • Sun: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; prefers cooler temperatures but performs well in varying light conditions.
  • Soil: Adapts to most soil types but prefers fertile, well-draining, loamy soil with a neutral pH (6.5-7.5).
  • Water: Requires consistent, moderate watering; maintaining even moisture is essential for crisp leaf texture and preventing bitterness.
  • Spacing: Plant seeds closely, about 1 to 2 inches apart, for baby leaf production; thin to 4 to 6 inches apart for full-size bunches.
  • Maintenance: Harvest outer leaves early for baby greens or cut the entire plant at the base; plant successively every 2 weeks for a continuous crop.
