Lavallei Apoballis is a mesmerizing, shade-loving tropical aroid (widely grown as a spectacular indoor house plant) prized for its striking, broad, spear-shaped matte leaves heavily splashed with stunning silver mottling against a dark green background, contrasted by rich burgundy undersides and deeply purplish stems. This exceptionally tough, unique selection is known for its remarkable, bushy habit and bold, painted foliage that creates a dramatic, artistic statement piece for any collection. Growing Lavallei Apoballis
Light: Bright, indirect light; thrives in dappled shade or near a bright window when grown indoors. It requires strict protection from harsh, direct sunlight, which will easily scorch its delicate, painted leaves, though too much shade will cause it to lose its striking silver mottling and stunt its growth.
Soil: Rich, airy, well-drained soil; prefers a highly organic, chunky aroid potting mix amended with perlite and fine orchid bark to retain adequate moisture while ensuring excellent aeration and drainage. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged soils.
Water: Moderate; water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It strongly dislikes being completely dried out, but absolutely will not tolerate sitting in standing water. Provide high ambient humidity to prevent crispy, brown leaf edges.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Wipe the broad, splashed leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their brilliant appearance. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, air conditioners, and heating vents to prevent environmental stress and premature leaf drop.
Wildlife: Generally grown indoors; its sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to pets if ingested. Outdoors, its thick foliage is naturally deer-resistant.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–11; widely grown as a spectacular, fast-growing shade annual in cooler regions or overwintered indoors as a vibrant, year-round house plant.

Lavallei Apoballis plants are shipped as healthy young starts in 4" nursery pots. Allow 1–2 weeks after arrival for plants to recover from shipping and resume active growth before repotting or planting outdoors.

Plants arrived in great condition. This plant has only been in the ground about 10 days and is growing a lot. The plant cage is 12” tall so it’s doing well. I put guards around my new plants for a little while because I have bunnies who love tender young leaves.

I got 2 mystery plants (one indoor and one outdoor). The indoor was a pilea and the outdoor plant was a white blackberry. White blackberry was dramatic, but it’s making a comeback and the pilea is doing great!

The plant arrived after a few delivery reroutes. It came with three leaves two so far are healthy one was dying and has since died. The two remaining leaves appear to be doing well.

I’m excited about this tiny banana tree and can’t wait to see it grow more! It came well packed and in perfect shape. Now this beautiful little plant has burned leaves, but that’s my fault because I left it out on my patio in the sun for a long time. Don’t do what I did. But you can see a new leaf already sprouting in the middle and just about to unfurl. I have no doubt this tiny tree will grow well.
