Hot Lava Coleus | Plectranthus scutellarioides ‘Hot Lava’ | Painted Nettle ‘Hot Lava’ | Coleus ‘Hot Lava’

Hot Lava Coleus is a spectacular, vibrant tropical perennial (widely grown as an annual or house plant in cooler climates) prized for its striking, fiery foliage that features a brilliant center of glowing red and orange, bordered by deep, dark purple to almost black scalloped edges. This eye-catching selection is known for its upright, mounding habit and its ability to add dramatic, warm colors to garden spaces. Its bold, painterly leaves make it a standout thriller for mixed shade containers, covered patios, window boxes, and shaded landscape borders. With its lush, tropical form and reliable performance, Hot Lava offers extraordinary, non-stop foliage color and dramatic texture with straightforward care.

Growing Hot Lava Coleus

Light: Partial shade to full shade; thrives in bright, dappled light but requires protection from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can easily scorch its delicate, colorful leaves.

Soil: Rich, well-drained soil; prefers a highly organic, loamy mix amended with compost to retain moisture while ensuring excellent aeration and drainage.

Water: Moderate to high; water regularly to keep the soil consistently and evenly moist, but never soggy. Coleus are sensitive to drought, and their leaves will quickly wilt if the soil is allowed to dry out completely.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Pinch off any small flower spikes as soon as they appear to direct the plant’s energy back into producing its vibrant, colorful foliage and to maintain a fuller, bushier shape.

Wildlife: Keep away from pets; toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Primarily grown for its spectacular decorative foliage.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–11; widely grown as a striking summer annual or overwintered as a colorful house plant in cooler regions.
