Sensational Lavender | Lavandula x intermedia ‘Sensational’ | Sensational Lavandin | Lavender ‘Sensational’
Sensational Lavender is an award-winning, sun-loving evergreen perennial prized for its spectacular, dense profusion of exceptionally large, deeply colored violet-blue flower spikes that rise elegantly above neat mounds of thick, brilliantly silvery-white foliage. This incredibly tough, heat- and humidity-tolerant selection is known for its remarkable structural integrity—featuring exceptionally thick, sturdy stems that refuse to flop—and its intensely sweet, classic lavender fragrance. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller and edger for sunny landscape borders, rock gardens, and mixed patio containers. With its bold, architectural texture and reliable performance through challenging conditions, Sensational offers an extraordinary display of vibrant color and intoxicating scent with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Sensational Lavender
Light: Full sun; thrives in intense, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) which is absolutely required to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, compact form. Too much shade will cause the stems to become leggy and reduce flowering.
Soil: Light, sandy, or gravelly, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor, rocky soils as long as drainage is excellent. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay, especially during the cold, wet winter months.
Water: Low; water sparingly once established, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes consistently wet feet.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Shear the entire plant back by about one-third after flowering in late summer to maintain a tight, mounding shape and prevent the woody center from splitting over time. Never cut back into old, bare wood.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its strongly aromatic foliage.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 5–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates provided it has excellent winter drainage.
