Mintleaf Swedish Ivy | Plectranthus madagascariensis | Mint-Scented Swedish Ivy | Plectranthus ‘Mint’
Swedish Ivy is a vigorous, fast-growing trailing perennial (widely grown as an annual or house plant in cooler climates) prized for its graceful, cascading vines of highly aromatic, softly textured green leaves beautifully bordered with striking, scalloped white edges. This adaptable, shade-loving selection is known for its exceptionally resilient, spreading habit and the refreshing, crisp mint fragrance its foliage releases when brushed or watered. Its lush, variegated leaves make it a spectacular, low-maintenance spiller for hanging baskets, mixed patio containers, shaded window boxes, and elevated indoor planters. With its elegant, trailing form and reliable performance in low-light conditions, Mintleaf Swedish Ivy offers bright, continuous texture and sophisticated fragrance with remarkably straightforward care.
Growing Swedish Ivy
Light: Bright, indirect light to partial shade; thrives in dappled sunlight or morning sun but requires strict protection from harsh, direct afternoon heat, which can easily scorch its delicate, variegated foliage.
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil; prefers a highly organic, loamy potting mix amended with perlite or pumice to retain adequate moisture while ensuring excellent aeration and drainage.
Water: Moderate; water regularly to keep the soil consistently and evenly moist, but never soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot, as the fleshy stems hold water well.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Pinch back the growing tips frequently throughout the season to encourage a fuller, bushier shape at the crown and prevent the cascading stems from becoming overly leggy or sparse.
Wildlife: Generally resistant to deer and rabbits due to its highly aromatic, textured foliage. Keep away from pets; toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–11; widely grown as a spectacular summer annual in cooler regions or overwintered indoors as a beautiful trailing house plant.
