Ideal Select Raspberry Dianthus | Dianthus x hybrida ‘Ideal Select Raspberry’ | Raspberry Pinks | Dianthus ‘Ideal Select Raspberry’
Ideal Select Raspberry Dianthus is a charming, early-blooming perennial (often grown as a hardy annual) prized for its profusion of vibrant, deep raspberry-red blossoms with delicately fringed petals and a classic, spicy clove fragrance. Part of the exceptional Ideal Select series, this compact, mounded selection is known for its remarkable weather resistance, performing beautifully through unexpected spring frosts and summer heat alike. Its tidy, blue-green foliage and vibrant, nectar-rich flowers make it a standout choice for border edging, rock gardens, mixed patio containers, and sunny window boxes. With its robust form and exceptionally long bloom time, Ideal Select Raspberry offers brilliant, long-lasting color and sweet fragrance with minimal maintenance.
Growing Ideal Select Raspberry Dianthus
Light: Full sun to partial shade; thrives in bright, direct sunlight to produce the most abundant blooms, but appreciates gentle afternoon shade in the hottest summer climates to prolong its flowering season.
Soil: Light, well-drained soil; prefers a fertile, loamy mix that is neutral to slightly alkaline. It requires excellent drainage to prevent crown rot, especially in wet or heavy clay soils.
Water: Moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It is fairly drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes soggy, waterlogged roots.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage a continuous, prolific flush of new flowers throughout the season and maintain a neat, tidy appearance. Shear the plant back lightly after its first heavy flush of blooms to rejuvenate the foliage and encourage fresh growth.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its fragrant oils.
Hardiness: Short-lived perennial in USDA zones 4–9; widely grown as a premium, cold-tolerant annual that provides excellent spring and fall color in all zones.
