Butterfly Blue Pincushion Flower | Scabiosa columbaria ‘Butterfly Blue’ | Pincushion Flower ‘Butterfly Blue’ | Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue’
Butterfly Blue Pincushion Flower is a charming, continuous-blooming herbaceous perennial prized for its spectacular, non-stop profusion of soft lavender-blue, pincushion-like flowers held aloft on wiry stems above neat mounds of finely cut, grayish-green foliage. This incredibly tough, heat-tolerant selection is known for its exceptionally long bloom time, often producing flowers from late spring all the way until the first frost. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for butterflies and bees, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller and edger for sunny landscape borders, rock gardens, and mixed patio containers. With its delicate texture and reliable performance through challenging conditions, Butterfly Blue offers an extraordinary display of cool-toned color with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Butterfly Blue Pincushion Flower
Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, compact form.
Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to average soils as long as drainage is excellent. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay, especially during the cold, wet winter months.
Water: Low to moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is drought-tolerant once mature but performs best and blooms most heavily with occasional deep watering during extended dry, hot spells.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Deadhead spent flowers frequently to encourage a continuous, prolific flush of new blooms throughout the entire season. Cut the old foliage back in late winter or early spring just before fresh new growth emerges.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 5–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates provided it has excellent winter drainage.
