Umbrella Tree | Schefflera arboricola | Dwarf Umbrella Tree | Parasol Plant

Umbrella Tree is a lush, easy-to-care-for tropical evergreen (widely grown as a house plant in cooler climates) prized for its glossy, bright green leaves that radiate elegantly outward from central stalks, beautifully mimicking the spokes of an umbrella. This highly adaptable selection is known for its upright, bushy habit and its incredible resilience in a variety of indoor environments. Its classic, glossy foliage and architectural canopy make it a standout choice for bright corners, living room floor planters, and modern indoor plant collections. With its robust, structural form and forgiving nature, the Umbrella Tree offers a sophisticated, tropical aesthetic with incredibly straightforward care.

Growing Umbrella Tree

Light: Bright, indirect light; thrives in well-lit indoor spaces but is remarkably adaptable to medium light levels. Protect from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its glossy leaves.

Soil: Rich, well-drained potting mix; prefers a standard indoor blend amended with perlite or coarse sand to ensure excellent aeration and prevent water from pooling at the roots.

Water: Moderate; water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil feel dry. It is fairly drought-tolerant and much prefers being slightly under-watered rather than sitting in soggy, waterlogged soil.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth occasionally to remove dust and maintain their signature shine. Prune tall or leggy stems back to a leaf node to encourage a fuller, bushier shape.

Wildlife: Keep away from pets; toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Primarily grown for its lush decorative foliage.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 10–12; widely grown as a year-round house plant in cooler regions.
