Hot Lips Sage | Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ | Hot Lips Littleleaf Sage | Salvia ‘Hot Lips’

Hot Lips Sage is a stunning, sun-loving herbaceous perennial (often evergreen in warmer zones) prized for its spectacular, continuous profusion of striking, bi-colored bright cherry-red and pure white flowers that bloom prolifically from early summer all the way until the first frost. This exceptionally tough, heat-tolerant selection is known for its remarkable, bushy habit and finely textured, highly aromatic dark green foliage. Interestingly, its blooms may shift to solid red during the hottest days of summer or solid white in cooler weather, adding a dynamic, ever-changing element to the garden. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny landscape borders, rock gardens, and large mixed patio containers. With its bold, two-toned color and reliable performance through challenging, dry conditions, Hot Lips offers an extraordinary display of vibrant summer blooms with exceptionally straightforward care.

Growing Hot Lips Sage

Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, bushy form. Too much shade will cause the plant to become leggy and significantly reduce flowering.

Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils as long as drainage is excellent. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay, especially during the cold, wet winter months.

Water: Low to moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes consistently wet feet.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Lightly shear the plant back in mid-summer if it becomes unwieldy to encourage a fresh, dense flush of foliage and a renewed wave of blooms. Prune hard in late winter or early spring (cutting back by about one-third to one-half) just before new growth emerges to maintain its shape and remove older, woody stems.

Wildlife: Highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its strongly aromatic foliage.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 7–10; widely grown as a spectacular, fast-growing summer annual in all cooler regions.

Shipping Info

Hot Lips Sage plants are shipped as healthy 5 gallon nursery pots. Allow 1–2 weeks after arrival for plants to recover from shipping and resume active growth before repotting or planting outdoors.

Customer photo review of Medinilla Myriantha 'Malaysian Orchid'

Very healthy cutting. Followed the instructions and let it get acclimated to its new surroundings for a couple of weeks before repotting. Would not hesitate to purchase from this business again 😃

Customer photo review of Pink Swamp Milkweed

Plants arrived in great condition. This plant has only been in the ground about 10 days and is growing a lot. The plant cage is 12” tall so it’s doing well. I put guards around my new plants for a little while because I have bunnies who love tender young leaves.

Customer photo review of Mystery Plant

I got 2 mystery plants (one indoor and one outdoor). The indoor was a pilea and the outdoor plant was a white blackberry. White blackberry was dramatic, but it’s making a comeback and the pilea is doing great!

Customer photo review of Musa 'Red Dacca' Banana

Need to upgrade your packaging. I would suggest taping the plant in place in the cardboard tube on the count that it slid and smashed itself. Luckily, it's a strong plant and should recover. Hoping.for the best.

Customer photo review of Pomegranate 'Dwarf Red'

This little guy came in perfect. Despite the cat knocking it over and being placed in the soup cup for safer keeping, it’s thriving and happy. Once it’s bigger then it will make its way outdoors.

Customer photo review of Violette de Bordeaux Fig

I received what I believe is a very healthy plant. Unfortunately, the shipping was very hard on the plant. It is quickly bouncing back. Wish I would have known it was a seedling .

Customer photo review of Violette de Bordeaux Fig

The package arrived with no issues. The fig was very stable & looked like it came out of the nursery (it did). The USDA certificates for Gypsy moth /Japanese beetles ensures the plant were checked makes me feel I finally found an institution which cares about the customer & plant. Thanks Jose

Customer photo review of Musa Truly Tiny Banana

I’m excited about this tiny banana tree and can’t wait to see it grow more! It came well packed and in perfect shape. Now this beautiful little plant has burned leaves, but that’s my fault because I left it out on my patio in the sun for a long time. Don’t do what I did. But you can see a new leaf already sprouting in the middle and just about to unfurl. I have no doubt this tiny tree will grow well.
