Phoenix Green Sedge | Carex ‘Phoenix Green’ | Ornamental Sedge ‘Phoenix Green’ | Carex ‘Phoenix’

Phoenix Green Carex is a versatile, striking evergreen ornamental grass (sedge) prized for its dense, cascading mounds of fine-textured, bright emerald-green foliage. This adaptable, fast-growing selection is known for its graceful, fountain-like habit that brings constant movement and a lush, architectural element to the landscape. It is a standout choice for adding structure and vibrant color to mixed patio containers, shaded borders, woodland gardens, and alongside water features. With its durable form and reliable performance across a range of soil moisture levels, Phoenix Green offers extraordinary, year-round texture and effortless elegance with exceptionally straightforward care.

Growing Phoenix Green

Light: Partial sun to partial shade; thrives in dappled sunlight or gentle morning sun, but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates provided it receives consistent, even moisture.

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay, but performs best in a rich, organic loam.

Water: Moderate to high; water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist. Unlike many drought-tolerant ornamental grasses, this sedge thrives in damp conditions and does not like to dry out completely.

Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Gently comb through the foliage with your fingers in early spring to remove any dead or brown leaves. The plant can be sheared back heavily in early spring just before new growth emerges to rejuvenate the foliage if it becomes tattered over winter.

Wildlife: Provides excellent cover and nesting material for birds; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its tough, fibrous leaves.

Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 6–10; provides fantastic evergreen winter interest in milder climates.
