May Night Meadow Sage | Salvia x sylvestris ‘May Night’ | Salvia nemorosa ‘Mainacht’ | Salvia ‘May Night’
Salvia May Night Meadow Sage is an award-winning, sun-loving herbaceous perennial prized for its spectacular, dense profusion of deep, indigo-blue flower spikes that rise elegantly above neat, compact mounds of textured, aromatic gray-green foliage. This exceptionally tough, heat-tolerant selection is known for its remarkable early-season bloom time and sturdy, upright habit that refuses to flop in the summer heat. Its nectar-rich blossoms are an absolute magnet for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, making it a spectacular, low-maintenance thriller for sunny landscape borders, rock gardens, and mass plantings. With its bold, intensely colored blooms and reliable performance through challenging, dry conditions, May Night offers an extraordinary display of vibrant color and structural interest with exceptionally straightforward care.
Growing Salvia May Night Meadow Sage
Light: Full sun; thrives in bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 to 8 hours per day) to produce the most abundant blooms, the strongest stems, and maintain a tight, compact form. Too much shade will cause the stems to become leggy and reduce flowering.
Soil: Light, well-drained soil; highly adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils as long as drainage is excellent. It is extremely susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay, especially during the cold, wet winter months.
Water: Low to moderate; water regularly until established, then allow the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once mature and strongly dislikes consistently wet feet.
Maintenance: Exceptionally low maintenance. Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly by cutting them back to the basal foliage to encourage a continuous, prolific second flush of blooms later in the summer. Cut the old foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring just before fresh new growth emerges.
Wildlife: Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds; naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its strongly aromatic foliage.
Hardiness: Perennial in USDA zones 4–9; exceptionally cold-hardy and reliable across a wide range of climates provided it has excellent winter drainage.
